Susan Boyle - Britain's Got Talent 2009

So often, no matter how hard we try, we still "judge a book by it's cover", even though we know we shouldn't. Last night was one of those moments.

Let's face it, Britain's Got Talent is just an excuse to see the village idiots go on stage and make fools of themselves, all in the name of entertainment (or more to the point, ratings and profit). And it does make great TV! But now and again the show throws up a real gem. Paul Potts was discovered on there for example. Well last night Simon Cowell and the other two Stooges found another sparkler... Susan Boyle.

This little non-descript lady in a frumpy dress, costume jewellery, wild hair and unassuming manor, who had never been kissed or by admission been given any other chance in life, stepped onto the stage looking every inch like another doomed to failure hopeful. The stooges, live audience and us at home all expected her to make a fool of herself and become yet another vitim of Cowell's arrogance.

I am so happy that I didn't go and make a cup of tea at this point, for what followed was the most incredible TV moment...

I feel humbled, ashamed, embarressed and ultimately a lot less smug than I did before. A stark lesson has been learned.

I echo Amanda's sentiment, it was indeed an honour and privaledge to watch.

Susan Boyle, I wish you all the good luck in the world in the competion and will certainly be voting for you.

In this instance at least, Britain certainly does have talent.
